Summary:

Responsible for the leadership, direction and execution of children’s educational classes, activities, and events as an integral part of faith formation and the overall ministry of Nassau Church. Lead the creation, planning and execution of spiritually-guided, inclusive activities that engage children and families and deepen the faith-based connections among the congregation.

Primary Duties:

  • Recruit and provide direction and training for volunteer church school teachers for classes from pre-school to 5th Provide feedback and recognition to teachers to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Manage teaching schedules and maintain list of substitute teachers to ensure church school classes are appropriately staffed each Sunday.
  • Review and select appropriate church school curriculum that effectively engages children and develops the core tenets of the Christian faith as rooted in our Reformed theology.
  • Organize and lead other children’s programs including Club 3-4-5, Worship Explorers, Vacation Bible School, Wee Christmas, Christmas Pageant, Family Christmas Eve Service, Time with Children, Orientation to the Bible, and others. Recruit volunteers to assist in delivering these programs.
  • Together with the Children’s and Families’ Ministries (CFM) Committee, evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs and recommend changes and new programs. Oversee the CFM annual budget.
  • Ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment exists for all children and families. Help every family to find fellowship in the Nassau Church community.
  • Maintain effective, ongoing communication channels (including weekly Next Gen e-newsletter) with parents, coordinating CFM programs with other church events.
  • Work collaboratively with Associate Director of Choirs for Children and Youth in implementing all programs and activities.
  • Attend regular Nassau Church staff meetings and provide regular updates to head of Church Staff. Serve as the liaison between the church staff and the CFM Committee.
  • Oversee the church nursery provided during worship services each Sunday, ensuring appropriate staffing, supplies, etc. are in place.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations concerning children’s health, safety and well-being.
  • Participate in Session meetings as requested.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in theology, religious education or related field highly desirable.
  • Experience leading and working with children in faith-based programming.

  • Collaborative working style, with ability to provide leadership, motivation and direction to a diverse group of volunteers
  • Creative thinker who is also open to other’s ideas
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • A self-starter with strong organization, planning and execution skills; ability to manage multiple projects effectively
  • Able to maintain a high level of integrity, discretion and discernment and effectively manage potential conflicts
  • Mature in his/her Christian faith, with dedication to the CFM program, volunteers, children and families. Comfortable speaking about Christian faith, with belief and dedication to the Reformed theological tradition
