Posted on January 18, 2021 by npc-laureny

Adult Education videos are posted each Saturday on our YouTube Channel and the Adult Education Videos page.

January 24 | Efraín Agosto

Teaching on the Inside: Lessons from the New Testament and Sing Sing Prison

Drawing on his experience of teaching in the Ossining Correctional Facility, also known as Sing Sing Prison, Efrain Agosto shares his experience of teaching the Christian Bible to the diverse population of a correctional facility.  Themes of empire, justice, forgiveness, reconciliation, and community take on new meaning.  He will also share insights gained regarding what life is like for the incarcerated.

As a seminary professor who also leads classes at the Ossining Correctional Facility, known as Sing Sing Prison, Efraín Agosto shares his experience of teaching the Christian Bible to the diverse population of a correctional facility.  Themes of empire, justice, forgiveness, reconciliation, and community take on new meaning in this context.  He will also share insights gained regarding what life is like for the incarcerated.

January 31 | Thomas “Tom” V. Flores & Thomas Fabisiak

Thinking Outside the Cell: Peril and Possibilities in the World of Mass Incarceration

The United States incarcerates more people per capita (and in volume) than any other country.  Join us for a brief overview of the mass incarceration system in our country. The history and statistics are sobering. But we will also discuss one promising trend that seeks to address this crisis, the “Higher Education in Prison” initiative, and look at encouraging examples of this initiative at work.

Thomas “Tom” V. Flores holds a PhD from Emory with a concentration in Religion, Conflict, and Peacebuilding.  At Life University, he serves as Assistant Professor of Positive Human Development and Social Change. He divides his teaching between Life University and the Arrendale State Prison.

Thomas Fabisiak is the Director of the Chillon Project at Life University. The Chillon Project brings college degree programs to those incarcerated in the Georgia prison system. Fabisiak holds a PhD in Comparative Literature and Religion from Emory University.

Jan 18: Clean Up at Mountain Lakes

Posted on January 14, 2021 by npc-laureny

The Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) is looking for some more volunteers to join us on Monday 1/18 for a day of service in the woods, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Can you participate? Email  to sign up!

  • Monday 1/18, MLK Day of Service,  9am to 12pm OR 1pm to 4pm.
  • Meet at the Mountain Lake House parking lot, 57 Mountain Ave in Princeton, NJ–take the long driveway entrance to the Mountain lake house parking lot, we will meet here at 9am OR 1pm and walk to the work site.

During this session, we will be working to restore the shoreline of Mountain Lake. Volunteers will use pruners, loppers, and hand saws to remove target invasive species for habitat restoration, as well as work to open up the beautiful lake view! Target invasive species for removal include burning bush, privet, and shrub honeysuckle. Our efforts will help to support existing natives such as Witch hazel, St. John’s wort, Flowering dogwood, Hemlock, and Beech, among others.

BYO: Please be sure to bring your own mask, water bottle, and work gloves to the stewardship session. We will follow social distancing practices when working by maintaining a 6ft distance from others and by wearing a mask when unable to maintain this distance. We ask that if you are feeling sick, have traveled, or have potentially been exposed to the COVID-19 virus to please stay home and join us at another time. We recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants, and work boots for volunteer days–it is best to dress and layers and keep in mind it can be muddy out there!

#MissionMonday – YAV Program (PCUSA)

Posted on January 4, 2021 by npc-laureny

A Year of Service, A Lifetime of Change

[ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_2third_end]A Year of Service, A Lifetime of Change The Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program is an ecumenical, faith-based year of service for young people (ages 19–30) in sites across the United States and around the world. YAVs accompany local agencies working to address root causes of poverty and reconciliation. Alongside this work, volunteers explore the meaning of their Christian faith and accountability to their neighbors in the community with peers and mentors. Current YAVs (2020-2021), are serving remotely. Applications are now open for a 2021-2022 in-person YAV service year.
