How Does Camp Pivot for the Pandemic?

[ezcol_1third][/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_2third_end]Johnsonburg Camp & Retreat Center pivoted this summer to continue to provide an updated camp experience in the pandemic. Six young adults committed to pod together and help extend camp safely. Their time included mailing camp to those who were unable to join in person and leading small family camps outside. The 60th anniversary of Johnsonburg looked different than anticipated but maintained the traditions of leadership development, community building, worship of God, and environmental education. The Psalms and the Life of Faith in 2020: Praise, Sorrow, Curse

John Calvin called the Psalms an anatomy of all parts of the soul. Martin Luther called the Psalms the Little Bible. This six-week series will discuss the Psalms and their role in the life of faith—ancient Israel’s and our own. Hymns of praise, psalms of lament, thanksgiving songs, and cursing psalms will be treated as a detailed anatomy of the soul and as an entry point from the little Bible to the big one.

Strawn’s research focuses on ancient Near Eastern iconography, Israelite religion, biblical law, the Psalms, poetry, and Old Testament theology.[/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_2third_end]Brent A. Strawn is Professor of Old Testament and Professor of Law at Duke University. He has edited over twenty volumes to date, including The Bible and the Pursuit of Happiness: What the Old and New Testaments Teach Us about the Good Life (2012), The World around the Old Testament (2014), and the award-winning The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Law (2014). Strawn is an ordained elder in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church and regularly speaks and preaches at churches across the country. He has appeared on CNN on matters ranging from Easter celebrations to Pope Francis to gun violence, and served as both translator and member of the editorial board for The Common English Bible.[/ezcol_2third_end]

 

*New* Outdoor Large Group Opportunities

This week the Forward in Faith Together Committee is excited to announce some outdoor large group activities that are being planned. Numbers will be limited so signing up will be required. We will also again commit to our outdoor large group covenant of health and safety.

The Werner family will host an outside gathering at their home in beautiful Dayton, NJ, on Sunday, October 18.  This will be an afternoon of fun games like Taboo and Family Feud for young and old alike.  Come meet Noel and Wendi, their daughters Sophie and Emily, and their dog Lola!  Bring your own snacks and a beverage, and we can provide chairs if you forget yours.  Let’s enjoy some fun and fellowship together.

On Sunday October 25th Cathy and Dave Davis will host a backyard cornhole tournament. Other games will be enjoyed and a campfire pit will be lit. Black Lab Rooney will have an offsite play date because he really likes the cornhole bags. And actually playing cornhole or joining the tournament is not required.

Last but certainly not least, Corrie Berg and the Children’s and Family Ministry committee will host a pumpkin carving party on Friday October 30th  (location TBD). Parent supervision will be required. And most importantly, it will be a BYO Pumpkin!!

Advent Devotionals—Call for Writers

Would you consider writing a meditation for our Advent season daily devotional series (Nov. 29- Dec 25)? These messages of faith and encouragement have become a meaningful tradition for our congregation, and for many beyond the Nassau community. We will share these messages through a daily email, and later, when the season is complete, as a PDF that can be downloaded from our website.

Participating is not difficult — here’s how:

Each writer will be provided a choice of texts and guidelines for writing. Because this is a dated resource, it is important that writers meet their deadlines. Choose one or two verses meaningful to you to write a short reflection on, and include a sentence prayer to close your reflection. It can be in any literary form: Prose, poem, haiku, dialogue, etc.

It need not be complicated; simply from your heart. Examples of our recent devotionals can be found here.

We invite you to be part of this meaningful event with our Nassau Church community and friends during Advent 2020.

Virtual Bible Study Opportunity begins October 8

The Rev. Sharyl Dixon at Kingston Presbyterian Church will offer a virtual Horizon’s Bible study instead of a group meeting.

The study, Into the Light – Finding Hope Through Prayers of Lament, begins October 8, 2020, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. and continues on the second Thursday of each month for nine lessons.  Learners are asked to contact Rev. Dixon to receive links for the virtual meetings.

Study books are $10 and are available from Christine Dippold, or from the Presbyterian Women website.
